This is what happens when you run out of the big spool of black that I use for bellies. Have to resort to scraps. I don't think I'm going to use black anymore for bellies. It's too narrow and hard on the eyes. I'm thinking of buying a big spool of multicolored stuff. It's a lot stiffer, which might help me cut down on bolsters.

Bright, isn't it! :P

I actually like how it looks. Too bad it's just a belly.

My new braiding gloves. I always tear up my ring finger and little finger while pulling tight, but at the same time I need full use of my first three fingers plus the first digit of my little finger for holding strands tight. I modified an old pair of shooting gloves.

That's a good idea on the gloves. I have a hard time finding anything thin enough. I too am rather fond of the colorful belly. :)

I love it when you make a whip, but only you know that underneath is not the colour they expect!
I need to work out where to get gloves, I've just been drying and tearing my fingers up as well XD

Second belly is done. It looks so nice that I was tempted to cut it off and make it a four foot, two layer whip.

Brandon - here are the gloves that I used. They're pretty inexpensive and thin, but tough.

I've tried cutting gloves before, but stupid me forgot how they're made, so they frayed quite a bit. I'm guessing these ones don't...only problem is, I live in Australia where guns are banned XD so I'll try find some similar types of gloves, thank you!

Brandon, some mechanic's gloves might work fine as would motorcycle gloves which some styles already have the fingers cut out.
Also golf gloves are thin but fairly tough but cutting them you would , like any glove, put a little glue on the seam where you cut it to keep the stitches from fraying where you cut it. Elmer's is good for that.

Depending on the material you could heat seal the cuts too. Lighter or a soldering iron. Granted that won't work for some materials.

I've used superglue to but Ron's suggestion may be safer cuz sometimes the superglue is a bit exothermic...

Efren, they also make a basting glue to glue hems with out having to stitch them or to augment the stitches in sewing fabric.
A good silicone might also work well.

Craig, I would definitely encourage you to think of a future whip with an overlay of that multi-coloured cord. I like it! :)

Thank you everyone for the advice, I'll try find some gloves :)
What colour/s will this whip be? :D

Brandon - this is my South Dakota whip, so the colors will be sky blue and yellow to match the state flag. I'll start the overlay today.

Starting the overlay. I'm really loving Bert's square start and I think I'm finally getting the hang of it. This is the first time that I've cut the colors in one order (b,y,b,y,b,g,b,g), but starting them in a different order (b,b,y,y,b,b,g,g).

I know the start is a little gappy, but I'll cover it with a knot and it's still nice and tight.

Craig, that's going to look excellent for representing the flag of South Dakota.
Some of the gaps will close up a little when you roll it.
Very nice.

Straight and stiff. Now if I can just keep it that way.
