Thats an interesting loop you created. Rather innovative.

Ron that hitch looks slick!

Thanks Rachel. :)
Here's a better picture of it .
It's pulling down a little on the plait it comes out of but
I think it'll be stable.

Well done Ron. Let's see how it stands up to a few good cracks.

Ron will you be waxing this whip?

I wish I could but I don't have the necessary stuff to wax.
I might hold off cracking it a lot until I can wax it.

I've been looking for a 17qt. turkey broiler on sale on Craigslist or Ebay, but nothing yet.
At least big enough to hold a 12" handle and the thong with out having to curl it too tight to make it fit.
I've heard that is really bad to do.

I've also seen people trying to sort of do parts of the thong / whip at a time, but I don't think
that's a good idea either.

Also the wax is pretty expensive to start with enough quantity at the beginning.
Of course you can reuse it after that.

I'm not even sure how much wax a broiler that big would take.
Maybe Roy would know.

Ron, I bought a 22 quart roaster on Walmart.com, it was a huge pain in the ass because it took them 3 weeks longer than it was supposed to get it, but once I got it the machine works fine. I went to Hobby Lobby with a 40% coupon that they have all the time, you can print it off their website and that really brings the cost of the wax down. That was enough to wax a 3 foot bull with plenty left over, I couldn't say though about a longer whip. Better to have too much than not enough. With Hobby Lobby though, you can take those coupons in there every day. That's how I get the markers I use for drawing because they're expensive. I think you did a fantastic job, that is light years ahead of my second whip. You should be proud :)

Thank you Tyler. Coming from you means so much to me.
I did find this on Ebay.
Would this work?

Hobby Lobby has 10lbs for 24.99 online + shipping (might be cheaper locally ?) but I have no idea of how much to get.

Never mind on the turkey roaster. It cost $35 to ship + the original cost.

Whip Nation has wax at a very reasonable price last time I looked

Rachel, it's about the same price as Hobby Lobby.
But it would probably be faster shipping from WN.
Do you know how much wax is needed to submerge a whip in a about an 18qt turkey roaster (24"x 17"x 11") ?
Seems like 10lbs. is a lot of wax.

Not sure, I have a pressure canner pot I use... But I could measure it and give you an idea

Ron, i think you'll probably need at least 2 or 3 blocks of 10 pound wax to cover the whip unless my maths is correct.

I had 10 pounds in my pot, 16" pot circumference. I've used up a good bit of that, maybe 1/4-1/3 of it is used. Around 7 pounds or so and it's close to 4" deep.
If that's of any help...

Rachel, you don't have to do that. :)
The container has to be kind of rectangular to have enough room
to fit the 13" handle and thong with out bending it at the transition too much to make it fit.
I'm not sure but bending it too much for waxing could be detrimental. I just don't know.

I think Philbert is probably right about 30 lbs of wax. That's $75 just for the wax.
I know it can be used again with some additional wax added as the level goes down after
the whip soaks it up, but right now that's a lot of money for me.
But I think it would help give the thong some help in making it more of one cohesive unit.

Philbert, I would not even know what kind of math formula to even think about using.
But I think you might right. Thanks. :)

Thank you guys for your help.

I'll do the calculations again and let you know, been a while since i had to do any maths.

The turkey roaster should have about a 162 pound volume according to the dimensions you have, so i think about 2 or 3 blocks of wax to be alright, i would get an extra just to be safe.

@ Ron May:

Thank you very much for your compliment Sir but I am far away of beeing a accomplished whipmaker (I will post pictures of failed whipmaking experiments to proove it).

The half hiches of your fall hitch look really tight and even and the loop creation on your fall hitch proofes that you are very innovative-very good job Sir!!!

You mentioned that you dont want to bend your transition to much while waxing your whip which is absolutely right. I try to avoid any stress on the transition area other than the stress it is beeing exposed to by whipcracking. Curling the whip up to much just so that it would fit into a small waxing container would not be good for the whip.
An alternative could be to wax the whip with the thong first, holding the whip in a position over the waxing container so that the transition area will have as little stress as possible. Then after the thong has absorbed all the wax it can, you can take the thong out of the wax and start waxing the handle area but make sure that the waxed parts of the whip are "overlaping" in order to make sure that all part of the whip have absorbed as much wax as possible.

Greetings Ben

I'll have to measure mine, but I don't think 3 blocks would have fit. Ron, the only whip I've waxed had a 6 inch handle so it wasn't hard to fit, but I know other people wax the thong up to the transition and then do the handle separately. I think that's what I would have to do. It's not ideal, but it's better than bending the transition. You might check your local thrift store for a used roaster in good condition? Then you could put the savings toward wax :)
