Hey folks!

Usually you make your own whips and don't spend any time in the Whip Basics Online shop. So I'll post it here. Guy Washburn created a whip for the online shop. And a very special one...

The description is as follows:
The core is composed of multiple layers of cross linked high density polyethylene (HDPE), fiberglass, nylon, kapton polymide, and vinyl. The finished thong is then pressure impregnated @20psi with 4045EP paraffin @250deg.f. for 15min, then cooled to 0 deg.f. for 30min, basically exposing the thong to temperature extremes it is unlikely to experience in normal use. Think of it as Cryogenics for whips. It's expensive to produce, but it results in a superior product which can be consistently reproduced. The whip maker can guarantee that the thong diameter on a matched pair will be within a tolerance of +/-.020 at any point it is measured.



Guy really came up with a very interesting - and new! - concept. Perhaps he could chime in here and answer some questions on that topic. If there are questions...

Probably the first that came to mind of everyone, how does it perform compared

to the more traditional core design?

My first idea on that one was, that it's veeery exact and well balanced. I couldn't tell anything about the inner life from cracking it - because it behaved very nice and straight. What I expect from a professionally made whip I don't know how that construction will perform over the years; simply because it's the first I have and it's just a few weeks old.

ok, i do understand that this is the core of the new whip-basics whip from Guy.
from the description i have no clue how he made it, is is braided?
It got a wax and heat/cold treatment and then finished with the braided paracord overlay.
Guy did you wax the overlay also?

I guess a year or two from now you need to let us know! Who know's, it may

hold up better than the traditional construction.

Hey Guys, As far as performance is concerned, I wouldn't send a whip to anyone that I did not believe was up to snuff with anything else out there.
As far as construction goes the "core" is spiral laminated with each layer @ perpendicular angles and opposing rotation to the previous. When the thong (including the overlay) is immersed in 4045EP @250f for 15min it Fuses the internal components. I have spent countless hours using a CAD program and a lot of trial and error, employing many different materials to arrive at this particular design. Longevity/Durability? The pic is one of my "Lab Rats"...it's about a year and a half old, has suffered abuses that I would not expect it to ever see with normal use. It has always been kept outside, the thong was kept underwater for the better part of a month. It's been cracked thousands of times by many different users ranging from skilled to downright abusive. Aside from falls and crackers it remains original and there is no discernible change in performance. I have other prototypes that have suffered similar, albeit not quite as nasty abuse, and they all have held up tremendously.
In closing I must convey that I still construct whips w/the traditional multiple bellies on request, but have primarily adopted this method of construction due to it's performance, durability, and repeat ability.
