Whip Basics. The Forum

So this is my first whip I have attempted to make, it is a 7' nylon paracord bullwhip, 10" handle, BB core, two bellies, 16 Plait overlay.

Artificial Sinew binding (open loop), and hockey tape. Made using Nick from Nick's Whip Shop's videos on Bullwhip making.

Now I have made my first I can see a number of things about it I don't like, or would do differently next time (next one is already in the pipeline). But for my first effort I am pretty stoked by it, I'm not amazing at cracking, but I does actually crack, so that's definitely a plus in my eyes, haha.

Were you trying to post a pic of the first whip?
Invisible paracord is a bitch to work with and even harder to photograph.

How does it crack?

Well, I'm not an expert, having never cracked anything close to a proper whip before having made this one.. but it is easy to crack, and it hurts when I miss, so I think it works? It seems to roll out nicely, but there are definitely a few spots where my transitions could have been smoother (one of the things I'm changing for my next one, cutting more chord then I need and actually measuring my drops so they can be more consistently spaced)

That sounds like a good plan.
Each whip will be better than the last.

Andrew, that looks like a very good first effort. Lively colours, too!

I know wrist loops were make popular by the Indy films, but do you really want them? I find they just get in the way.

Andrew there is no visible major broblems in your whip.

You could make your last bit of your core thinner so you can transition and plait on your whips tip better.

For first one that is much much better than mine!

Nice whip, Andrew, certainly much better than my first attempt. A good many of us got our start with Nick's videos. He's sort of like the Bob Ross of whip making. I hope that isn't too obscure a reference. I don't know if he was known outside of the US or not, but he has quite a large cult following here, even though he's been dead for quite a while. Thanks for the kind comments, it was really fun to make, I loved every part of the process, not just the overlay.

the Bob Ross comment did go over my head sorry.

The wristloop I'm not a fan of, I put it in because it was on the whip from Nick's video, and because it gave me a chance to try some flat plaiting to much about with stuff. But I don't think I'll be using them in the future unless I get to the point of making whips for other people and am requested.

Yeah, I'm actually experimenting with TT on my next whip, so that will change the transitions a bit. My plan now is to make a some 4 footers and muck about with a few different ideas and techniques, find my groove I guess?

Andrew, that a pretty good first attempt. Like the colors too. And as far as I can see from this pic, the seams are rather straight too.

Nick told you how to make a whip, here you will learn how to craft and understand a whip.

If you infest your time, you'll be creating pretty decent whips in no time with such a good start.

Bob Ross was a very softly spoken painter that had a tv show in the 70's. He was so popular because his voice is so soothing and he often referred to objects in his paintings as "happy little trees" or "splashy bits of sea" or "jagged, angry rocks." I loved his show and my kids watch him on netflix and love it too. I think Nick's voice is very smooth and soothing too and he reminds me of Bob Ross as well.

Nick definitely had the crazy hair to match Bob at one point! :p

Very nice Andrew. Many of us came here after making a 'Schrader'-style whip. If your next whips have good straight seams like this first one, you're well on your way.
