Whip Basics. The Forum

I did this last year so i tough i could do it this year as well.

This year i'm going to to a stockwhip.
This time i'm going to do plaited keepers and i try to get that double taper out of my head to this whip.


The core is 3x 275 cord and 2x 550 cord.


The one on the right side is the keeper end and the left one is the end of the belly. Middle one is 8 plat, hopefully it gives it enough meat to show.

I'm going to make wooden handle to this one.

Jyri, I'll look forward to this build. I have yet to decide on a stockwhip, bullwhip, or cow whip. Anybody with a preference let me know!

I have the same problem with Collin.
The reason i make a stock whip is that i dont have to bind anything.

I am stuck with sertain models like my bullwhips and i am struggling to get rid of my stuck patterns.
Positive side is that you get these funny ideas as you are trying to figure out your next build like plaited fall, double looped cracker and double tapered stock

I'm leaning towards a cow whip or stock whip with a mahogany handle

Jyri I recognize those leather gloves with the fingers cut off and coming apart at the seams because the fingers were cut off. I’ve found baseball batting gloves work pretty well.
I love how the color of your whips match the snowy environment i’ve seen in a lot of your videos. It makes them look simple but they are far from it because your plaiting always looks so perfect. Can’t wait to see more progress.

Here is the brass concho. I would have rather used a stainless steel one but i didnt have any.

Next i habe to scratch my head and think how i'm going to do english eye and the keeper.

I was going to suggest as this is a "Finnish" stockwhip maybe a Birchwood handle? But then I see the overlay in black and the blackened handle works.

Trying to do the overlay with a keeper on one end and an English eye on the other is a challenge. They both need to be "seamless". One suggestion would be to do a plaited keeper and bind it to the thong, and then do the English eye and plait backwards. When you get to the keeper end plait over the bound keeper and bind the ends again. Cover with a ring knot of some sort.

Another option would be to get a thin piece of nylon webbing or belting and fold it over forming the keeper. Bind it to the thong. Start at the fall end and plait up the thong. Bind it when you get to the nylon keeper and cover it with a knot.

Traditionally a stockwhip doesn't have an English Eye, but there are no wrong ways to make a whip.

It is actually dark blue.
That nylon webbing could be easy to do. I have few feet of plaiting to think about it

I love how you prepared the handle Jyri. I’ve got a few walking sticks/staffs that i’ve burned and waxed. It truly makes a beautiful finish on the wood.
The progress is looking good! Is that bluish binding artificial sinew?

I finished the overlay and now i'm trying to find out the keeper sizes. I have no idea how to do it. If i do it like Adam it feel flimsy, like i would be fighting the thongs spine.
I may have to make the keepers little thinner.
